2014 Canary Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir

2014 Canary Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir

The 2014 Canary Hill fruit was picked on September 19th, 2014 and both blocks came in at ripe sugar levels.  Barn Block came into the winery 25.7 degrees Brix and pH 3.20 and the Old Block was harvested at a near optimal ripeness of 24.8 degrees Brix and pH 3.20.  We picked just under 5.6 tons of fruit from the two blocks, and nearly 60% of the fruit was from Barn Block.

The 2014 Canary Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir is a five-barrel blend of two blocks of Pommard planted on their original roots in 1983 and 1984.  It is 3/5 from Old-Block Pommard - some of the oldest vines we work with every year.  In the glass, the wine exudes a rich concentrated nose of dark fruit, baking spices, cinnamon, unsweetened cocoa powder, vanilla sticks, steak tartare and rose petals.  On the palate, the wine is more refined and elegant than one may first have anticipated after smelling the rich aromas.  The tannins are fine and well integrated and the soft mid-palate leads to a refreshing acid-driven finish.  The wine is drinking exceptionally well out of the gate and may be a wine that could age for ten years or more.
